PieFed right now feels like early reddit and I missed it

submitted by

If it gets big, there will be a lot more moderation and the 3 letter organisations wanting to censor certain things. But right now, it feels like a small prestine community and I love it

Hopefully decentralization will prevent it from enshittifying. Time will tell if anyone finds a way to ruin it, but I agree - I really like it here!

That is hope. Without any central control. People should be able to frequent and flow to better alternatives. Not being beholden to shitty mods and admins. Though there are a few small cracks in the concept. Not everyone has the knowhow or resources to host etc. But that’s a bar that’s low enough to be acceptable at this point.

And a lot of effort has been put into lowering that bar still significantly further, to allow for more people to participate, even at the level of running their own personal instance.

Oh, absolutely. I was very chuffed to see, talk the other day about a piefed doctor instance. And a little worried about the current state of some of the code inside it. But it’s still definitely a good thing overall.

That sounds neat - I did not see that, do you have a link?

Unfortunately no. It came up in a slew of meme posts new years day.

Ah, I searched for “PieFed doctor instance”, and looked through all the posts from the last week in this and the Fediverse communities, but I am not subscribed to the largest meme communities so that’s probably why I missed it. Thanks!:-)

For that to happen we need to kill Lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world, they are the two most centralised instances and host the majority of content.

Removing them would split things up a bit more evenly now that the instance landscape has diversified.

I read in a thread that lemmy.ca admins are reluctant to defederate from ml because ml admins might deny pull requests and refuse to offer support.

It is deeply unsettling to me that one instance can hold other instances hostage when the fediverse is specifically designed to prevent that sort of thing.

That arguments always held little water with me. Unless someone can show examples of it happening, it seems an excuse for cowardice.

And if people can show examples of it happening, why the hell hasn’t anyone forked it?

If anything, lemmy.cafe who defeated from .ml (rightly so) still gets support from the devs.

And there’s no evidence of that. Lemmy.cafe defederated and the Lemmy devs still supported them via GitHub. It’s unfounded.

Lemmy.world won’t defederate from .ml because they’re afraid of losing the traffic from the idiots there.

Don’t ask me how I know this- but I know this.

If that’s the thread here, there’s very little evidence of such issue: https://lazysoci.al/post/39100205/20288910

And people will just gravitate towards two or three others. This isn’t how you fix the problem.

If they gravitate to 3 others that’s an improvement. Breaking up the ‘too big too defed’ instances is the only way to fix it.

Lemmy.ml isn’t the second largest anymore.

In terms of actively hosted communities or userbase?

by Piefed.social Staff depth: 7

Active users.

A quick count on piefed’s active user column indicates that only 5 out of the top 100 communities originate from lemmy.ml

Hehe, sort by (Monthly) Active Users (MAUs) at https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list - lemmy.ml has only 2k of them in total.

Lemmy.world has >14.1k, so is 7x larger. I seem to recall that at one point Lemmy.ml was the #6-7 instance, though now after much shuffling (including the enormous loss of lemm.ee) it seems to now be #3, behind sh.itjust.works with 2.5k. lemmy.zip (even after making PieFed.zip) and feddit.org are each nearly as large as Lemmy.ml, and Lemmy.dbzer0.com and lemmy.ca are not far behind.

PieFed has roughly as many MAUs as Lemmy.ml, with PieFed.social alone having 1k.

I blocked lemmy.ml a year ago and haven’t missed it in the slightest. Granted, some communities such as “Firefox” are much smaller outside of it than on it, but that mainly affects niche content, and I still see so MANY Firefox posts on technology communities, that I don’t find that I am missing anything. Occasionally I view content from other instances, and I cannot recall in nearly that whole year’s time ever once regretting missing out on a comment from someone on Lemmy.ml - quite the opposite actually, some of the most batshit insane and even just commonly banal and self-serving comments all tend to come from that instance, and I find the Threadiverse on the whole a much nicer, more friendly, helpful and interesting place after having blocked it.

Of course, depending on what communities you are interested in, ymmv. Many people in communities located on Lemmy.ml are fine with turning a blind eye to everything going on around the world on that instance, and that’s their decision (although in that case, if the content creators are allowed to hold their audience hostage, then why wouldn’t we all still be on Reddit?), but for myself I have chosen the version of the Threadiverse that suits my own needs the best, and moved on. So I wanted to clarify that it is indeed very possible to do so, if you wanted.

Right, and there will just be another .ml and another .world. The problem won’t have been fixed, it’ll just be moved.

Those instances got big because they were the earliest ones and had the benefit of being the first people found.

People gravitate to where there’s people. Think of them the same as you would matter forming in an early solar system. They gravitate towards larger masses and the leather they get, the more pull it exerts.

Wherever the most people are, that’s where everyone will go when .world and .ml are gone, because nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd.

There will never be an evenly divided fediverse. It’s just now how people are.

I think we REALY NEED account migration tools. If let’s say 5 instances get big to cover 80-90% of all content (together) then those instances will get infiltrated. There will be venture capital trying to get in. And there will be government censorship/propaganda. The way to fix this is for people to leave those instances. But they will never do that if it means they loose all their posts/comments/likes/etc. The best thing the fediverse can do is encourage users to move instances frequently.

It’s also nice that lemmy can see piefed posts.

I remember and miss early reddit too :D

We just need an Old Piefed theme. :)

Feels exactly the same as lemmy to me. 🤷‍♀️

Yet it’s good to have some technical diversity. Makes the eco system more resilient.

Are you using an app?

I’ve tried both app and web.

Web definitely feels different to me. Same content without peen and vajeen, though.

Web definitely feels different to me.

thematically, sure. The content of course is all the same. The basic feel is the same. I get the excitement for some of the more ‘advanced’ features, but I don’t see why that couldn’t be implemented elsewhere.

Is there a piefed specific client that isn’t the webapp? How do people commonly access the content?

Voyager works very well, it’s the same experience as with their Lemmy integration (but no Piefed specific features, for that I used the mobile WebUI).

I’m using Boost for both Lemmy and PieFed

Just to throw in another option. I’ve been using Blorp on Android for this last week and it has been great

I second blorp, works amazingly with piefed.

I’m new here, but feel more comfortable than with Lemmy. Reddit feels like a shit show

wowwwwwwwwwww mod. wowwwwwwwwwwww.

Oh, it’s the fuckin’ dev. Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. What a guy!

Apparently it’s “off topic” that Rimu uses his community infrastructure software to bully individual users, in the community dedicated to that software. (eg https://lemmy.ca/post/53919427/19689116)

What a fuckin’ guy!

If you’re not proud of it, revert it. And if you are, why suppress it? What a fuckin’ guy.

by Piefed.social Staff depth: 3

Calling it bullying is a stretch and a half - I went and found the user who does it, and yeah - it’s annoying to read from my perspective (which played into his decision - no doubt), but honestly, are you just gunna complain this everywhere?

Also I can see the symbol when looking at it from piefed.zip or piefed.world.

I mean, yeah, I am now!! Could have just been a casual comment.

It’s clearly bullying.

by Piefed.social Staff depth: 5

You know I can literally see the symbols on piefed.ca and piefed.zip, right?

It’s not bullying as it’s a local setting, piefed.zip and piefed.ca display the symbol just fine.
