Downvote button missing

After spending a couple of days mostly interacting with PieFed via Thunder, I’ve logged into my account on piefed.world and no longer seem to have a downvote button. What’s happened here? I cleared all the site data for the piefed.world domain, logged in again and I’m still seeing the same problem, both for posts and for comments.

There are a couple reasons why the downvote button isn’t visible and I can see why it isn’t for you. You can see the python code here if you want to view it yourself.
There’s a lot of shit on the Lemmyverse that needs downvoting. Unfortunately this means that I have to abandon PieFed and go back to Lemmy, despite how horrible its devs are and how the instance they admin is dragging the whole Fediverse down. I’d hoped I’d finally found a decent alternative. I guess not.
Really, I should have left as soon as I noticed the “Attitude” score to begin with, but I guess I was too optimistic.
Yeah or you could upvote a bit more often.
If Lemmings would post more things worth upvoting, I would.
Think of an upvote on something as a fractional downvote on everything else. It’s more efficient ;-)
It goes the other way too. When you downvote you effectively upvote everything else.
FYI attitude is recalculated once every 24h so it might take a while to change.
It’ll take more than “a while”. I’m not touching that account again unless they patch that “feature” out of PieFed.
Sorry, nobody asked me to chime in, but I believe this is part of the design because we have annoying people on the internet. It’s like at a party. You’d invite someone and all they do is complain about everything. The food, the company, the music… And that’s just obnoxious. Both to the host and other guests. We’d rather have well-adjusted people at our party who also bring some kind of positivity or joy to the place. Or at least make some kind of useful suggestion about the music. I mean there’s already plenty negativity on the world, we don’t need to specifically focus on bringing that everywhere.
That doesn’t mean dissent isn’t being allowed. Even contrarians can be good company. But also in psychology or education… If you want to raise your kid or train your dog, you don’t just scold them all day. They’ll definitely turn out bad that way. The correct approach is to focus (mostly) on positive reinforcement. Even once you feel you’d like to punish them, more often than not you should reconsider.
I’d do the same thing here. Go find some joy. Or things people did well and go ahead and praise them with an upvote here and there. Just to mix up things and do something constructive, like with the dog, or the party. Don’t feed internet trolls. They feed off of your downvotes. IMO we had a better approach in old-school internet forums (before social media) when we used to penalize trolls by ignoring them and not giving them the attention they crave for. Same with political debate. It’s fun and all to have a shouting match and downvote war on social media. It’s just very unhealthy for society.
Just my personal opinion, though.
The problem is that the Lemmy community is crap, which is why our numbers keep decreasing. People come in, take a look at what gets upvoted here and leave and I don’t blame them. A lot of that is due to the fact that the Lemmy software was developed by some absolutely awful people, who also control one of the largest instances and are therefore able to influence the direction of the overall community, so I was excited for the chance to reduce their power by switching to PieFed. Unfortunately, apparently doing so means forfeiting my ability to play my part in curating the Fediverse community and trying to steer it towards something that people would actually want to participate in.
I know I’m basically pissing into the ocean, but I want the idea of a decentralized Internet to succeed, so I’m going to keep doing what I can even if it means going back to Lemmy. Hopefully at some point we’ll have a federated discussion system that’s actually worth using.
Hehe, I like your style of writing. I’d phrase it differently, but I’ve been pondering basically the same question.
Still think pissing in the ocean is a questionable endeavour. Especially with the wind coming towards you, and people standing to your sides. There must be better ways to pull it off?!
You could also try mbin. The devs over there have been pleasant to work with. Overall, from interacting with rimu, the philosophy generally is that PieFed tries to give you many more filters and blocks at your disposal so that you just aren’t exposed to the kinds of toxic users/communities/posts that you would need to downvote so much. It is a different philosophy, but it is opinionated and it isn’t going to be for everybody. This is a strength of the fediverse that there are other options for you to explore.
I don’t think downvotes federate at all, in Mbin.
