This app could potentially supplant Tik Tok overtime. As Tik Tok’s censorship following it’s acquisition by US investors such as Oracle, Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based MGX, and UpScrolled already having questionable ethics, this may be the path forward.

You’ll get taken to a random community. Once you arrive there’s a link at the top of the page to /r/random so you can just hammer away at that until you get somewhere that’s the right combo of random and interesting.

In PieFed v1.4 it will be possible to label posts as having AI generated content. Labelled posts will get a little badge near their title, similar to how nsfw and nsfl content is labelled. Mods and authors can change this value on a post in the same way they do flair and nsfw, using the little tags button in the bottom right or in ‘More options’ when editing their post.

Recently we’ve seen a spike in PieFed users, a lot of this came form raising awareness of PieFed’s existence on Reddit.

There was a discussion about this article 2 years ago here and here, but I thought it’s such an interesting a novel concept full of potential that it’s worth a repost.

PieFed is seeing quite steady growth, nice to see.

On Digg there’s some drama because someone registered the community “/wallstreetbets,” and the admins took it from him and gave it to one mod of the subreddit “r/wallstreetbets.”

While Sanseito is a minority party, based on current forecasts, it is expected to capture a significant number of seats in Japan’s House of Councillors.

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about PeerTube, Loops, Bandwagon, and other platforms in the Fediverse that are geared around artists. I might get flamed for this, and you’re welcome to disagree, but I think the network is in dire need of having support for commerce.

All the cool effects, honorifics, translator notes that explain references that you might miss as non-japanese viewer… Whoever put this much effort for free more than 10 years ago, thank you! It was so refreshing seeing this in the era of corporate sloppy subtitles!

Some comrades over at Hexbear have organized a donation drive for Palestine and, over the past few weeks, have managed to raise over $1500 for verified Palestinian fundraisers. The fediverse is a good place full of good people.

PieFed v1.4 will have Stack Overflow-like functionality: the person who posted a question will be able to choose which of the replies are the answer, by clicking the green tick icon in the bottom left. Chosen answer(s) then have a highlight and a green tick at the top of them.

I browse different lemmy instances usually because the feed is always different. Was blown away when I recently went to lemmy.today, no clue when they did the change but whoever is in charge of the design has my admiration! (*chef’s kiss*)

Looking back at a year of FOSS activism, spurred by political events.

Recent reports have announced that Crunchyroll, the largest anime streaming service, will be replacing Aegisub with Israeli Software, OOONA, to produce subtitles more efficiently. Anime fans across the world are disappointed with this collaboration due to Israel’s ongoing genocide against Palestinians (via a report by the United Nations Commission of Inquiry).

For the newest piefed release, I worked on a new feature, that allows community admins to choose a “community theme”, which overrides the users theme while they are browsing the specific community. This works for every user on piefed, that has the newest version, it unfortunately won’t show up on lemmy, because they have a completely different theming system.

It’s now way prettier and contains almost 1300 accounts.

At the beginning of last month, a crosspost to a lemm.ee community showed up in my feed - and it would seem that it showed up in mine alone.

TL;DR: link to sites. link to communities. don’t just post content, but more importantly make people aware that the community exists.

A consortium consisting of multiple interested parties including Murena, i.e. /e/ OS, iodéOS, and Volla, is working on an open source alternative to the Google Play Integrity API, which is to be offered on smartphones that are not running a Google-certified Stock ROM.
