Old vote totals and comments seem to be missing on posts that predate this instance.

The books community on Lemmy.world has a couple specific threads that seem to be missing old content when viewed by accounts on this (PieFed.world) instance. We run a book bingo and there is a post with the rules and a separate post with recommendations and when I am using my PieFed.world Account I can see any new comments added to it, but I don’t see any of the old comments. This is particularly problematic on the recommendations post as those comments contain recommendations for each of the squares in bingo.
Is this an expected behavior or is this something that will be able to be resolved in the future?
I’ve included screenshots to show what I’m talking about in the comments on this post.
This is kind of how lemmy federation works. In general, an instance really only knows about things that have happened since it has existed. When an instance is instructed to go out and fetch a new community, it does pull in some recent posts (lemmy is the 20 most recent, piefed is 50 iirc). However, lemmy doesn't provide the past comments along with those posts, so piefed.world can't backfill the comments on that post automatically. The same is true for any other activity on the post (such as votes), and the same would be true if you were on a new lemmy instance trying to fetch these older posts. This is actually an area in which piefed -> piefed federation works better than lemmy -> lemmy or lemmy -> piefed in that piefed does provide comments to older posts to help backfill (but not votes) posts.
If you want to retrieve comments, you have to do it one at a time. When you are on the community page, over in the sidebar, there is a link to
Retrieve a post from the original server. Click that and paste in the canonical link of the comment you are trying to fetch. The canonical link in lemmy is what the little fediverse logo by the username on each comment is linking to (at least in lemmy-ui, different apps/frontends are different). If you paste that canonical link into the field on piefed, it will go out and fetch that comment and bring it into the post. Some caveats:Yeah...it sucks, I get it. There are probably smarter people than I that can automate this kind of thing with scripts and api, but afaik, that doesn't exist yet.
doing it one by one on a limited set of posts is fine. I kind of figured that’s what it was but those particular posts were kind of important at the moment.
Thanks for the help.
logged in from my normal Lemmy account I can see the comments below the post
When signed in from my PieFed.world account The posts look nearly devoid of comments or voting, the only comments that show up our brand new test comments that I posted from my prior lemmy account
